Former member of underrated sweet power pop combo The Merry Go Round, Emitt Rhodes began his excellent solo career with The American Dream for A&M Records. Later introspective albums for Probe underlined his status as a cult singer songwriter but this glorious effort bridges the gap between neat pop melodies and soul searching rhetoric. There’s a trace of hippie musing but this is a cry for a lost nation and a glorious celebration of life.
