Amazing Blondel were an oddity. Using traditional instruments, playing music from a bygone era, it was the kind of stuff that could only blossom in the late ‘60s where musical experimentation and men wearing period costumes was de rigueur. In a time when the heavy blues machine was clicking into action and folk was having a faltering birth as folk rock, Blondel took music back to its earliest beginnings. Evensong was the band’s debut for Island, after an earlier effort for Bell Records. A lilting folk strum with some gorgeous harmonies are the setting for some medieval values and tales of seasons and tradition, a stirringly odd concoction to say the least.
