After tackling spirituality and humanity on 1971’s groundbreaking album What’s Going On, Gaye felt that, in many respects, his work was done. He dabbled in soundtrack work (the magnificent Trouble Man album) and overtly in politics (the 1972 anti-President Nixon single, ‘You’re The Man’), but following up his opus was proving problematic. He found the solution with Let’s Get It On. What What’s Going On did for politics Let’s Get It On does for love and sex. It helped kick-start the ‘love man’ genre of soul that proved so popular in the 70s and 80s. Its eight tunes are all sensuous masterpieces, sounding clearer than ever, thanks to this remaster from the original tapes.
