Pre-dating his Columbia releases by more than a decade, this 1956 album for Prestige was hailed as “an art world Martin Denny” by the Dusty Groove website, its rhythmic feel, vocals that sound like instruments, minimal arrangements and Eastern instrumentation making it sound like a zany slice of American folklore which indeed it was. Moondog was a street musician who’d been championed through various 78 and EP releases since the ‘40s, this unique set taking this strange chamber music way beyond his New York roots.
